August 2012
The final project "Windenergy of Switzerland - Potential and Challenges" of Ms. Caroline Haldimann, a high school student, was rated the best at her school “Kantonsschule Hottingen.” Furthermore, her project was ranked among the best 50 student projects of 2012 in Zurich and formed part of a recent exhibition at the Zürich Stadthaus (http://www.maturitätsarbeit.ch/web).  Ms. Haldimann was supported in her work by Ms. Gülru Kocer, a PhD Assistant in LEC. LEC is glad to support the educational activities of Switzerland’s future engineering corps.

June 2012
At the 2012 ASME Turbo Expo to be held to be held June 11-15, 2012 in Copenhagen, Denmark, the Best Paper Award of the Steam Turbine Committee will be presented to the paper “Design Considerations for Axial Steam Turbine Rotor Inlet Cavity Volume and Length Scale.” This paper was presented at the 2011 Turbo Expo in Vancouver, Canada. K. Barmpalias, A. I. Kalfas, and R. S. Abhari of LEC, together with T. Hirano, T. Sasaki and N. Shibukawa from Toshiba, authored the paper. The ASME Turbo Expo is long recognized as the world's leading conference on all aspects of steam and gas turbine technology, and therefore LEC congratulates its colleagues on this achievement.

Three members of the Laboratory presented a paper at the EWEA 2012 Conference in Copenhagen, "Detailed Measurements in the Wake of a 2 MW Wind Turbine".

December 2011
LEC was awarded a Best Poster Award at EWEA OFFSHORE 2011, the world’s largest offshore wind energy event, which was organised by the European Wind Energy Association (EWEA). The poster authored by Kress C., Barber S., Chokani N. and Abhari R.S. and entitled “Improved Modelling of Wakes: Experimental Study and Experimentally Anchored Model,” was presented in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. November 2011

Members of LEC have recently attended the 10th International Gas Turbine Congress held in Osaka (IGTC 2011). LEC has presented the papers “Controlling Mixing at the Interaction Zone Through Systematic Variation of the Inlet Rotor Cavity Volume and Length Scale” authored by K. G. Barmpalias, A. I. Kalfas, R. S. Abhari, T. Hirano, N. Shibukawa and S. Takashi as well as “Hot Streak Shaping and Migration in an Axial Turbine” authored by K. Regina, A. M. Basol, P. Jenny, A. I. Kalfas and R. S. Abhari.

Prof. Abhari participated in a panel discussion on CO2 reduction in power plants together with Japanese panelists from power system companies.

EWEA2011 Best Poster Award awarded to LEC

Europe’s premier wind energy event organised by the European Wind Energy Association (EWEA) was held 14-17 March 2011, in Brussels. The poster “Wind Turbine Performance and Aerodynamics in Wakes within Wind Farms,” presented at EWEA2011, and authored by Barber S., Chokani N. and Abhari R.S. of LEC was awarded one of the event’s four best poster awards.

Donald Julius Groen Prize, IMechE, awarded to LEC


The paper “Unsteady numerical investigation of the effects of wakes with eddy shedding in different axial turbine aerofoils,” published in the IMechE Journal of Power and Energy, Vol. 223, No. 8, pp. 1001-1016 (2009) and authored by Mokulys T., Rose M.G., and Abhari R.S. of LEC together with Congiu F (Alstom) has been awarded the IMechE’s Donald Julius Groen Prize for the best paper related to Thermodynamics and Fluid Dynamics published in the journal of Power and Energy.

The paper “In-situ heat transfer measurements on coated and uncoated turbine blades of a full-scale turbine,” published in the IMechE Journal of Power and Energy, Vol. 222, No. 3, pp. 331-338 (2008) and authored by Brunner M.H., Rose M.G., and Abhari R.S. of LEC together with Mühlbauer K., (Alstom) has been awarded the IMechE’s Donald Juluis Groen Prize for outstanding achievements in the field of Thermofluids.

At the ASME Turbo Expo 2009, in Orlando, Florida, the Structures & Dynamics Committee shall present the paper, GT-2008-50466 “Experimental Study on Impeller Blade Vibration During Resonance: Part 1 - Blade Vibration Due to Inlet Flow Distortion”, authored by Kammerer A. and Abhari R.S., as the Best Paper award winner from ASME Turbo Expo 2008 held June 2008 in Berlin.

Measurement Science and Technology highlights LEC work

The paper “Time-resolved entropy measurements using a fast response entropy probe,” published in Volume 19, Issue 11 (2008) and authored by Mansour M., Chokani N., Kalfas A.I., Abhari R.S., has been selected as a 'highlight' from Measurement Science and Technology in 2008. The article appears in a special collection issue of journal highlights and that is free to read until 31 December 2009. Download article as PDF.

2008 Measurement Science and Technology Outstanding Paper Award – Fluid Mechanics. Read citation.

The Editorial Board of Measurement Science and Technology has awarded the paper “Time-resolved entropy measurements using a fast response entropy probe,” published in Volume 19, Issue 11 (2008) the award for Outstanding Paper in Fluid Mechanics for 2008.
